USAID provided support funding to the Government of Bulgaria for emergency balance-of-payments support to cushion the negative effects of the Kosovo crisis on Bulgaria's economy. The funding was used for external debt services of the Government of Bulgaria to the US and the World Bank. That enabled the Bulgarian Government to redirect its local currency resources to support four major social and economic welfare programs.
