USAID assistance in this early period provided the Union of Democratic Forces with the tools and know-how to compete in elections, and supported civil society actors involved in the struggle for democracy, including the Bulgarian Association for Fair Elections and Civil Rights (BAFECR) and the independent trade union confederation, Podkrepa.
